April Goal: Style.
April 2, 2008
April is here. With it I’m going to improve my style. Here’s a snapshot from my Boston shoot that I’ve re-edited to give it a little more umph.
Last month was by far my best month blogging. Thanks to the rams making it to states, and the performance of Once on this Island, page views to aaronsnyder.net jumped to 20,892 from 17,267 in February, and 9,362 in January. Sometimes I sit back and really take in those numbers. It’s amazing to me that a high school senior from Old Saybrook, Connecticut has that many views a month.
Because it’s in my nature to always push myself. We learned that this is called self-actualization in psychology, I’ve set a goal for this month: style. I look at college photographers like Matt Eich and realize how little my style has evolved. I realize that I have a lot to learn, and a lot of shooting ahead of me to develop a style of my own. But I really think I need to pay specific attention toward developing a style of my own. It seems like I always shoot with the intention to get the shots I need, not the shots I want. In fact, none of my shots are shots that I “need.” No one’s paying me, no one will be particularly angry if I don’t post a million shots. (That’s another habit I’m trying to rid myself of, uploading crappy shots.) So my goal for this month is to really stay away from the easy shots, really try to get creative and make a shot. If I’m going to become a photojournalist, I need to set myself apart from everyone else with a camera.
For right now I’m not going to go the “normal” route for developing style. Which, from what I’ve read, has to do with camera angles and lighting. Instead I’m going to start trying to make my pictures say something. I don’t want my picture to be of X doing Y. Instead I want it to say why X is doing Y.I know this is going to be an extremely difficult, and a life-long goal, but I’m going to do my best to work on it this month. So, hopefully we’ll all enjoy the fruit of my new “style.”
My second goal this month is to really use the blog to update with posts. I think it’s important that my blog is a resource for me to track my progression and for me to help teach others. In that regard, I’ll be posting some more guides as well as these rambling type posts… Well, time for class.
